BEAST 7.0 – OPENING CEREMONY
BEAST RETURNS TO THE CITY OF PORTO FROM SEPTEMBER 25-29TH WITH THE OPENING FILMS OF THIS YEAR'S FOCUS COUNTRY - ESTONIA
The festival’s OPENING CEREMONY showcases three short films from Estonia’s most recent context: “Sauna Day” (2024) by Anna Hints and Tushar Prakash, “Heiki on the Other Side” (2022) by Katariina Aule and “Miisufy” (2024) by Liisi Grünberg.
These films form a cinematic triptych connected by the imprisonment of those – and what – we follow. As they leave from one realm to another, as they establish contact with other possibilities and other universes, different resolutions and different paths can emerge.
“Sauna Day”, recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, is an invitation to the viewer to enter the world of men from southern Estonia who go to the dark and intimate space of a smoking sauna after a hard day’s work.
A highlight of the festival will be the presence of directors Anna Hints and Tushar Prakash, who will share their creative process with the audience the day after the opening ceremony (26.09), in the conversation LET’S TALK! Sauna Day with Anna Hints and Tushar Prakash, moderated by film critic and programmer Cátia Rodrigues, in the café-bar of the Batalha Centro de Cinema, with free entry.
“Heiki on the Other Side”, a dark comedy about the death of a young man who ends up in an underworld facing the consequences of his death.
And “Miisufy”, screened at this year’s Sundance festival, is a short film inspired by Tamagotchi, a Japanese virtual animal created at the end of the 1990s, and tells the story of a virtual pet cat who, fed up with its owner, begins to rebel.
