Director Heli (Häili) Speek was born on May 15, 1948, in Tartu. She graduated in 1975 from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, specializing in documentary film directing. She worked at Tallinnfilm from 1975 to 1993.
