LET’S TALK – QUEER CULTURE IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
In this edition, BEAST brings back the discussion panel LET’S TALK – QUEER CULTURE IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE. In this conversation, motivated by a strong desire to share different understandings of the queer experience, we want to delve into the intricate landscape of queer representation and storytelling within the Central and Eastern European cultural scene.
For this purpose, we will have as guests Bohdan Zhuk, Director of Sunny Bunny, the first LGBTQ+ festival of Ukraine, the first edition of which took place this year; Sasha Prokopenko, Head of Programming at Kyiv International Short Film Festival; David Benedek, Filmmaker and Programmer at Slovak Queer Film Festival; and Romas Zabarauskas, Filmmaker from Lithuania.
Each queer person’s experience is different, so sharing narratives of oppression and resistance is fundamental in ensuring the safety of the community and its future. In this way, the role that each of the guests plays is crucial to preserve a queer archive, raise awareness and fight for equality, as well as to build new narratives about sexuality, identity and acceptance.
In this conversation, we not only want to seek the culture made up of all of us, but also share our hopes and aspirations for the future of queer culture and its place in society. Here, in this space of constant search, we seek the care, the visibility, the dialog, the exchange that can come from – the creative impulse of – cinema.
