BEAST – International Film Festival is back in Porto for its second edition. On the 5th of June, BEAST IFF presents with Cineclube this year’s edition of Portuguese Abroad, a platform dedicated to the promotion of Portuguese filmmakers outside the country. The event will take place in Casa das Artes with the screening of the documentary Portuguese from Soho by Ana Ventura and texts of José Luís Peixoto. The doors open at 21:30 with the presence of Rui Ventura, the film editor, for a conversation by the end.

The production tells the story of the Portuguese immigrants that arrived in New York after the 50’s, telling the story of a community, but also of Soho, a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan where between 1960 and 1980 lived approximately 700 Portuguese families. The community grew to have a school, church, markets, football team and recreational clubs.

The director, Ana Ventura Miranda, moved to NY in 2006 where she funded the Arte Institute in 2011 with the purpose of promoting Portuguese Contemporary Culture abroad, is one of its most well-known activities the NY Portuguese Short Film Festival. Ana Miranda was also awarded the Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira Prize for her work with national relevance.

Direção Regional de Cultura do Norte partners with the organization in making this a free entry screening, welcoming everyone curious to discover the Portuguese Abroad and the program of BEAST IFF 2018.
