Beast International Film Festival 25 — 29.09.2024

BEAST 6.0 – OPENING CEREMONY

BEAST RETURNS TO PORTO BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 27 AND OCTOBER 01 WITH OPENING FILMS FROM THIS YEAR’S FOCUS COUNTRY - SLOVENIA

BEAST’s Official Opening Ceremony will take place on September 27, from 21h15 in Batalha – Centro de Cinema. The festival will kick-off with the screening of three short films, directed by three female directors from Slovenia: “Granny’s Sexual Life”, directed by Urska Djukic; “Steakhouse”, directed by Špela Čadež; and “Sisters”, directed by Kukla.

“Granny’s Sexual Life” is a personal portrait of the constraints often inflicted upon female identity, closer to a general representation of (maybe still not just) past issues concerning women’s bodies, sexuality and imposed societal role. “Steakhouse” leads us into a universe where the meat that is cooked is that of the patriarchal discourse. And “Sisters” is a film that highlights the importance of a community of women – cis and trans – in order to survive, to exist.

These three films are about (all!) women’s lives. Telling us something about the past and present struggles, from different generations’ points of view, resulting in a communal cinematic embrace of looking – together – towards a better future.

BEAST – International Film Festival will be hosted across a range of venues throughout Porto, including Batalha Centro de Cinema, Cinema Trindade, Cinema Passos Manuel, Casa das Artes, and OKNA – Espaço Cultural, with the intention of bringing together both visiting and local cinema audiences. In addition to the more than 100 selected films, the festival’s programme extends to a series of exhibitions, workshops, and panels events.
