EEFFN AWARD WINNER: PERLA

EEFFN – Eastern European Film Festival Network brings together five film festivals dedicated to promoting and showcasing Eastern European cinema and one partner organisation. The primary objective of the network is to enhance cooperation and collaboration between the member festivals in order to increase the visibility and impact of Eastern European Cinema across Europe.

This year, EEFFN selected “Perla”, by Alexandra Makarová, as the EEFFN Winner, being showcased in all the network festivals.

PERLA (2025)
In 1980s Vienna, a dissident artist’s life is turned upside down when her ex-partner reappears after being released from prison, triggering a dangerous journey back to Czechoslovakia that threatens her newly discovered family.

Alexandra Makarová (1985) is a Slovak-Austrian screenwriter and filmmaker, born into a family of artists originally from Russia and Greece. She moved to Vienna, where she studied screenwriting and filmmaking at Film College Vienna. Her second feature film, “Perla,” had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2025.
