ERUPCJA
CHARLI GOES TO WARSZAWA
Rob (Will Maiden) and Bethany (Charli XCX) are on holiday in Warsaw. The city, supposedly more romantic than Paris, quickly becomes nothing more than a stopover when Bethany decides to seek out Nel (Lena Gorá), an old Polish friend with whom she had lost touch. Over sixteen years, they have accumulated scattered encounters and a persistent coincidence: whenever they cross paths, a volcano erupts somewhere. They share an effusive chemistry, a penchant for poetry and a tendency to put off decisions — and, with that, their own lives. In Warsaw, they repeat the pattern: they meet again, read poetry and complicate their love lives. This seems to be what Erupja (2025) is about: romantic passions as an irruption into a quiet everyday life. The images of the volcano punctuate and interrupt the film’s flow, as its focus shifts to relationships as a driving force. After all, volcanoes do kill people – they leave perfectly fine boyfriends in the dust.
